Culture and Transport: breaking down barriers to access

Evidence shows that lack of access to suitable transport prevents many people from getting to cultural sites, or makes it more difficult.

Around 4% of the general population give lack of transport, or difficulty getting to a destination, as their main reason for not visiting a cultural venue or event in Wales.

However, this increases to 7% for residents of Communities First areas. Access to affordable transport is a more significant barrier for people living in disadvantaged communities than for the population as a whole.

We have worked with partners and colleagues in the culture and transport sectors to produce this information as part of the Fusion: Creating Opportunities through Culture programme.

We want to help cultural organisations increase access through practical, realistic and cost-neutral or low-cost measures to improve transport links.

We have included information about the transport sector, examples of best practice, and where to find resources and additional support.

We particularly want to  support people who are experiencing economic, social, physical and other barriers to cultural participation.

Integrated transport planning

Organisations should consider transport access to their sites as an intrinsic part of what they do and how they operate.

Providing affordable public transport

For some people and communities, lack of affordable, convenient and accessible transport can act as a major barrier to participating in culture.

Developing bespoke transport solutions

Organisations should in some cases consider subsidising travel where possible for programmes they run.

School transport

Visits to cultural venues and historic sites remain popular options for schools as a way of supporting many key areas of the curriculum. However, schools face challenges, particularly cost, which prevents visits taking place or affects the choice and quality of their options for visiting.
