Preventing food waste

Around 400,000 tonnes of food and drink are wasted by families in Wales each year. Most of it is, or was, perfectly good food that could have been eaten.

Each month, families throw away about £50 of food that was bought and not eaten.

Reducing food waste is a priority in our waste strategy, Towards Zero Waste.

Making a difference

There are simple steps you can take to reduce the amount of food you throw away:

  • make the most of leftovers
  • plan your meals
  • store food correctly
  • don’t cook more than you need.
