Organ donation

We are committed to increasing organ donation rates.

We must do more to save and improve lives through organ donation and transplantation. The NHS still does not support some people who want to donate and more can be done to ensure that donated organs are used.

We need to:

  • build on the progress of the past five years
  • pursue consistently excellent practice in the care of every potential donor
  • maximise the use of every available organ.

Getting it right every time in hospital will not be enough. The UK needs to increase donor and family consent to match the transformation already underway in NHS services.

The Human Transplantation (Wales) Act which has introduced the soft opt-out system plays a significant role, but this is only one part of the system.

Alongside this, the implementation of Taking Organ Transplantation to 2020 will bring in the changes needed for significant improvement in organ donation and transplantation.

Organ Donation Wales

The way we choose to become organ donors changed in Wales on 1 December 2015. The new system means that if you haven’t recorded an organ donation decision (opt in or opt out), then you are treated as having no objection. Take time to understand what this means and talk about it with your loved ones.

Organ Donation Wales (external link) features the stories of families who have received and donated organs, and information about the new system.

You can register your organ donation decision on the Organ Donation Wales website (external link) or by calling 0300 123 23 23.

We conduct regular research to help inform and evaluate our public information campaign about the 'soft opt out' system for Organ Donation that has been adopted in Wales.
