Providing the Welsh Government with independent professional advice on oral health, dentistry and dental healthcare matters.

Wales’ Chief Dental Officer (CDO) is Dr Colette Bridgman.  

Dr Colette Bridgman

Dr Bridgman, who is from Belfast, qualified in Manchester in 1983. She has clinical experience in:

  • hospital services
  • general dental practice
  • the community dental service.

She was the strategic dental lead Consultant in Dental Public Health, within Greater Manchester’s devolved Health and Social Care Partnership. She has also worked within the office of the Chief Dental Officer in  England, working on a number of high profile strategies. She has served as President of the British Association of the Study of Community Dentistry.


  • works across all Welsh government departments and with a range of external partners to improve oral health, the quality of dental healthcare services and patient outcomes and to reduce inequalities.
  • leading the dental profession in Wales and has a strategic role in oral health regulation, education, training, standards and performance
  • providing leadership in the development of policy and legislation relating to the dental profession, dental healthcare and oral health.

The CDO works closely with:

  • UK Chief Dental Officers, government departments and stakeholders to coordinate oral health activity and information
  • health boards to encourage and strengthen local engagement, developing appropriate responses to oral health and dental issues across Wales
  • various other organisations including:
    • General Dental Council
    • British Dental Association
    • Public Health Wales
    • Healthcare Inspectorate Wales
    • Dental Section of the Wales Deanery, hosted by Cardiff University.
